Well, from what I have read so far, I feel I have dug a deep hole and jumped right in by buying this 1995 Explorer XLT 2WD.It only has 130K miles and is in excellent condition......except....on the drive home after buying it I notice that it wont shift out of 1st gear unless I let off the accelerator. Then all shifting seems to be just fine. Then the O/D light starts blinking telling me of a transmission module/code issue. Next door neighbor has a scanner that will read Ford and he comes up with a 646 and 648, 2nd and 4th gear incorrect ratios. The fluid looks fairly new and the previous owner has added an external trans cooler in front of the radiator.

I'm definatley not a noob with auto repair as I have been a GM tech since 1982, but have never worked on a Ford. Against my better judgement, I pruchase a can of Lubeguard for Ford trannies. First I disconnect the battery for 10 minutes. Then I add the Lubeguard and let it sit and run while I am shifting thru gears in the driveway. I let it run and warm up for approx. 30 mins., then go test driving. It still wont shift out of 1st gear unless I let off the accelerator, and for the time being, the O/D light is not blinking (although I think it will again). I was told of a notorious shift solenoid that needs to be replaced whether the tranny is overhauled or not, but looking over the diagrams and schematics, there are many shift solenoids.

Any clues or tips for an easy out of this situation other than a complete overhaul as that is out of the question?

Thanks in Advance for any help

Thank you for moving this to the right section as I am just learning my way around. Negative on the warranty...I'm on my own. Could a broken band cause both the sticking in 1st gear until letting off the accelerator AND the codes of 646 and 648? And what would be the way of diagnosing this to be sure?

Thanks Again
