Okay folks, I've searched high and low. There are some EXCELLENT threads, photos and how to messages out there but seem to differ from my transfer case. While my Shift Motor is suspect (it is not turning at all while changing the dash switch), I'm trying to manually place my transfer case in 2 Wheel High but it keeps spring returning to N or Neutral. This is very different from what is listed in other posts. There is NOT a "notch" or "Detent" where the shaft stays in anything but neutral.

Furthermore, my casting is different from others listed elsewhere on the boards. Whereas Brian's outstanding thread http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123542 shows:
4L at 12 o'clock
2H at 9 o'clock
4H at 6 o'clock
and two arrows both indicating only counter-clockwise rotation.

Mine shows:
L at 12 o'clock
H at 9 o'clock
N at 6 o'clock
and two arrows indicating rotation either way from neutral.

Does my shift motor act as the "holding mechanism" to rotate and secure the shift shaft? Any insights / explanations are most appreciated.

Feedback re 4405 Transfer Case shifter mechanism

Hey Folks - Just in case anybody is searching for how the shifter rod should feel, it should move VERY easily between H and L. There should be no need for a wrench of any sort. Furthermore, the shifter rod should softly "lock" into position, the shifter motor serves as check to hold it there. The reason mine was returning to N was the shifter springs (and everything else inside ) was gummed / varnished beyond belief. Amazing what a failed oil pump will do.

A big tip of the hat to Bret and Tyler at Allstar Automotive in Denver. These guys will get you hooked up with the right gear. They are committed to making things right!
