1995 XLT 4wd issues. started with light now it runs really rough

Hello everyone,

Truck is keeping me busy..

Like the intro stated. I noticed I wasn't able to switch into 4wd at low speeds but only when at a dead stop. Once I am in 4wd it is super rough. As in I do not want to drive it in 4wd at all. Call it a shudder or a rough drive but I searched with as many descriptions as I could.

What to check first ? U joints ? Can I yank and pull on the front drive shaft to test it ? I have no check engine light on. Dont know if it would come on at all anyways.

You are talking about 4wd auto?

You can pull the front shaft and test drive without issues. A 4wd system fault would cause the 4wd light to flash, at least with the 96-01 models. 95 is an odd year due to the OBDI

Yup the 4wd auto was fine last season. I’ll pull it then. No codes are flashing.
