1995 Ford Explorer xlt
Hey. I know this may sound really dumb but my boyfriends tranny is on its last mile everytime we get in it. He's changed out sensors, had to do some shift cable replacement, has had tranny fluid completely flushed but still it's gonna go, I have been telling him(because he's rather fond of his xlt) that he should keep it and modify it. He and his brothers are all pretty good mechanics(lack of patience may be a factor). Its a 95 xlt can the electronic tranny be replaced with a manuel 5 speed? Or a manuel a4ld? I mean we need some serious guidance and advice. He owns it , and really doesn't want a car payment. I guess I am asking what can of modifactions can be done transmission speaking, because the one in there now truely is a peice of ****,why in the world anyone up there at Ford thought that a light duty transmission in a 4x4 is beyond me,furthermore I would have never believed if I hadn't seen it first hand how many crucial pieces of a car made out of plastic.(thumbwheel on shifter for one). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Heres the truck details...1995 explorer xlt automatic 4x4 Thanks again.

A couple of things to know....

1. If you change to manual, a clutch etc...has to be fitted too...a lot of work.

2. An A4LD is only an Automatic...there is no A4LD manual, there is a Mazda manual in early models.

Do you mean the clutch pedal? If so that's one of the easy parts. The clutch pedal and brake pedal assembly are one piece on the rangers. You just need to buy the pedal setup from a scrapyard.

Josh C. did a swap to a 5-speed manual. You might want to ask him.

I don't understand this paranoia

If the IAC on the engine stops working do you go out and get a new engine? If something goes wrong with the transmission, fix it. Unless these relatives you call mechanics only wash cars at the dealership, there is no reason that they couldn't rebuild this transmission themselves for very little money. Switching transmisions is absolutely insane! So what doesn't this transmission do that it is supposed to?

Well first , as of Sunday it no longer has 1st or reverse, but thats ok...Today my ship came in. A friend of ours owns a salvage has a brand new tranny for us still under warranty and you'll never guess how much..$200. Another $200 to put it in and hopefully I won't have anymore tranny questions, but I'm sure I'll be back for other questions because it seems everytime we fix something 3 more things break. Thanks to all whom replied I really appreciate it, before long I'm gonna start charging my friends for auto advice. I've learned lots of valuable info on this site..Thanks again...
