1996 Eddie Bauer 5.0 L Question

About a month and a half ago I replaced my 1991 Explorer XLT with a 1996 Explorer Eddie Bauer. My new Explorer is a small upgrade, less miles, body and interior is in better condition, and the engine is in better shape.

Now my goal is to try to increase the average MPG of the 5.0L from about 18 MPG to 25 MPG or so. After reviewing Aldive's Mileage Monster, for an example of modifications, I started to search around and create a wish list of parts.

My question is in regards to any air intake system and throttle body upgrades available for my vehicle.
1) I am wondering if there is a MAF that is made for my vehicle. The stock air filter housing has the MAF built into it and the MAF is entirely different than examples I have seen. From what I can tell all MAF upgrades are located externally on top of the housing and I don’t think they would work for my application, I hope I am wrong.
2) I also would like to know if a throttle body upgrade exists out there. When I search around I can only find throttle bodies for the 5.0L in mustangs, will they work?
Those are the big two that I question, every thing else is understandable so far.

Any help/information would be greatly appreciated.

I also want to make sure it is known that I reside in CA so to make sure the tight emissions are considered in any advice.

The MAF comes off of the airbox with 4 screws. And yes, there are larter/ported TB's for the Explorer- I see them all of the time on eBay.

Thanks. Do you have any recommendations for an air intake system and what size TB I should be looking for?

torque monster headers for the 5.0L will increase mileage, do a search for them

I assume your new truck is 2wd?

Yep it is a 2wd. My older x was 4wd but I rarely used it so it was no loss. I have looked into the torque monster headers and I like, I want to get them along with a new exhaust set up.

im in the mustang world since 9 years and for your throttle body , I think you should leave the stock one (65mm) many mustang driver try to find explorer TB for they engine upgrade . I have a explorer intake on my mustang , 65mm TB and i put on the wheel 345RWHP .

Bigger is not better for a throttle body .

You should think to upgrade the Maf .and a better air filter or cold air .

First upgrade on mustang are , gear , maf , UD pulley , and a full exhaust . Probably the same things apply on Xplorer V8 .

25 mpg from the 5.0? Good luck! Be happy if you can consistently get 20.

I consistantly get 17mpg mixed... I once averaged 22mpg with 90% interstate.

I've tried driving like a grandpa and then driving like me and I still get the same gas mileage no matter what.

celly,
his is the 2wd version. I dont think 25 is unforseeable; mine is AWD and I get 15/20 average city/highway absolutely bone stock.

Thanks for the great information.

I figured 25mpg may be a wet dream but "It is better to shoot for the stars and miss
than aim at the gutter and hit it."
