The wife brought the XLT homoe on the battery right after the dash and lights went blank. I used my multi meter and found the Alt was not charging, the parts stored confirmed the problem. I installed a "New" Alternator, not a rebuild, after 30 seconds it started smoking and was hot to the touch. Prior to this I had jump started a a 1987 Chev Celebrity for my inlaw. Could the battery be bad and shorting out the Alternator? I've looked for burnt wires, chafing, blown fuses, nada, all good. Help???????
