Can any one help me? I have a 96 limited edition ford explorer..i let my brother inlaw try to install a aftermarket amp and subs but when he,gave,it back there was no sound at all and he told me that he could figure out what the problem is..i have a stock amp and sub and another box im not too sure what it is in the way back on the passenger side i believe the amp is blown so how do i go about hooking up the after market amp and replacing the stock amp?

You could tap the speaker outputs right after the OEM amp, if it is not dead. That is what I did for my "Budget Bass" project. I tried to tap right before the OEM amp, but the signal was too weak.

Also, the OEM 5V remote would not trip on my aftermarket amp.

The '96 Explorer's radio is a strange beast. The actual factory radio and AMP are found in the cargo area. The part in the dash is just the radio's controls.

Did he buy an aftermarket wiring harness for the 96 Eddie Bauer which would utilize the existing wiring for the amp?

96s are close to most aftermarket setups, I don't know really anything about anything behind 98, I have a spare stock 96 radio around here somewhere though, came in a V8 radio panel I bought a long time ago.

I believe the 96 and the 98 are very close to being the same puppy, but when I installed my aftermarket radio I had to buy a wire harness adapter to utilize the stock amp, and that was to make it easy for me, you could very well tap into the existing harness if he knew the color of the wire to tap into. There are many wires on the mach system, tap into the wrong one and it won't work, which it kind of sounds like he has done, if it was working before.

95-97 Premium Sound (Limited, EB) are JBL, and the head unit sends digital signals to an amplifier in the rear. All 4 channels are sent thru one wire. 98 has the amp in the radio head unit, so it is a different squirrel.
The JBL amplifier is useless for aftermarket radios.
There is also a special subwoofer driver amp which could be used.
Aftermarket stereos require a long bypass harness going from front to back to use the speakers. It is an expensive install in a shop because more trim has to be removed. The speaker harness in in the rear, and you have to take apart all the trim on the passenger side.
This is the only wiring harness that will work. It also has an antenna lead:

You CAN use the subwoofer if you can run a 12V trigger line (power antenna could be shared) to the trigger wire of the subwoofer amp. Then you can tie together two of the front line outs (not speakers) if you don't have a dedicated sub output. This will require running some extra wires with the above harness(I believe you may be able to use the power ant wire). But you definitely need 2 extra wires for the audio.

Some people also install a resistor because there is a subwoofer pop when the radio is first turned on, won't hurt anything though. I didn't have that issue, may not be a problem with these amps.

No no wire harness..but the aftermarket amp is hooked up with its own power ground n remote..i need a diaphragm of the wires to knw which ones to hook up to the amp

When I took out a PAC OEM-2 converter, I wrote this down. With that info, and the PDF instructions from it, maybe you can hook it up correctly. Note that I tapped right after the OEM Ford amp.

Thank you 96eb96 that great info to know but the system I had to use to utilize my amp was this one:

That was the second harness I bought as the first one was more like the one you posted and it did not work for me, and now, thanks to you, I know why. Mine had the amp built in. I love this group as I learn almost everyday!
I knew there were some differences in the stereos but the 97 work's in my 98 as far as radio goes with the power antenna whether or not the sub worked I honestly don't know as I did not know to test that. I was looking around for head units at the time in the local pic-n-pull and took a 97 head unit hoping it would work, (the lights), and it did not but the radio did.

Edit to last post. Went and dug up old receipt from Neal's pic-n-pull twas a 98 head unit. Sorry for the mis info.
