I just came across a set of 1997 mustang cobra wheels, look like theyre in decent shape, $200 with bad tires. Not sure what the stock size wheel is on the 02 xlt, but I have a feeling these are an inch bigger which is okay for me because I want to fill the wheel well up a bit more. Im assuming these wheels will go on no modification needed. Please correct me if im wrong as I have to scrape together the $200 after all the projects I've done in the past two weeks. Plan is to get them powdercoated in the spring with some tires that are geared more towards street driving.

Thanks

First I would check the actual backspace on the wheels and compare them to what you currently have.

Acc to tirerack, the XLT came with 235/70-16 oem tires and the 97 cobra would have 245/45-17 tires. This means that your selected wheel is 1 inch larger. You definitely need new tires and depending on tire of choice you may have some fitment and clearance issues (the wheel and tire combination may be too far in) and may also need wheel spacers adding up to the total cost. If possible at all, I would try and see if you could trial fit the wheels. Just take off the front wheels from the xlt and mock mount just the cobra wheels.

There should no issues with the wheels fitting...

I have run both the 16" 1995 Mustang GT and the 18" 2000 Mustang Cobras on my 99 Sport 2wd...I had no issues with the wheels fitting on the hubs at all...

Since I run this truck on the street 100% of the time, I use road tires on the wheels I installed.. This could cause the speedometer to be off if the wheels were not close to the stock tires...

On the 16" wheels, I ran 255/60/16 and on the 18" Cobras I ran 255/55/18... The speedometer was pretty close with either set of wheels...
