1997 Explorer Key Fob

Trying to get an old key fob working but I think it needs new batteries and I will take care of that tomorrow. I have tried the programming procedure and everything I have read says to turn the key 8 times. My Explorer enters the programming mode after 5 key cycles. Does this mean I have other problems? Thanks

replaced batteries and tried the programming the remote. Explorer locks cycle after turning key switch 5 times but does not see remote. The remote tests good at the auto part store with a little tester display for remotes and batteries. This is an original remote that used to work but sat in a drawer for about a year as the driver door lock had problems. Fixed the door lock and decided to try and get the remote working. The push buttons on the door still work. It is not a big deal but I would like to get it working. Any ideas on what to try? Thanks
