While going up a mountain yesterday, lost all trans power when it automatically tried to downshiift from OD to drive. Trans works in all gears when manually shifted (except reverse) but it won't downshift on its own. When vehicle is stopped, have to manually shift to 1st to get it rolling then it seems to upshift automatically when shifter moved to drive. Was near the end of a 300 mile trip and no problems up to that point.

I can get vehicle to move in reverse if I hold RPMs at 2000-2500 for a few seconds. It slowly begins to move and reverse speed gradually increases.

Would appreciate any opinions on possible problem. Trying to decide whether to attempt a repair on my own or take it to a shop for a rebuild. Had a total rebuild 4-5 years (40-45K miles) ago.

I can't remember if transmission is 4R44E or 5R55E. If it makes a difference, I can check and post later.

Just wanted to bump this up to see if anyone can give possible cause.

Is it worth trying a VB rebuild before doing another full trans rebuild?
