Where and how much is a TRANSFER CASE for a 1997 Ford Explorer XLT v6 4.0 ltr? Just bought it from lot and not even two months i'm told it needs to be replaced. I know nothing about it......rookie obviously. I'm anxious to know cause....my job is on the line. And one shop here in town is having a hard time (3 days) just to find a price. And the Ford Dealership can get one. But the estimate is at $2000. I'm having it picked up from shop right now cause they are not getting any further on it than the day I brought it in. Gonna take it to Ford. I'm curious if this price is average. Its ALOT of money for me that I dont have. So any info on what or where I can see pictures or prices for my exact model would be greatly, deeply appreciated. I've been searching web, but there are so many finds, I need a more exact find. Thank you kindly

A brand new T-Case, depening on which model your X has, will run anywhere from about $1,000-$1,500 alone just for the case. Then you need to add the labor to install it. So, that $2,000 estimate you got it probably pretty close. That's for just the T-Case, if any other parts were damaged that's more $$$$$.

If you are taking it to the Ford dealer you are going to pay through the nose for labor, so be prepared for that $2,000 bill.

I checked www.fordpartsnetwork.com

Transfer Case - Borg Warner 4405, Electronic Shif, Transfer Case Assembly, Explorer
List price $1,760.53
Ford Parts Network price $1,461.24

plus shipping :(

What problems are you experiencing with the 4wd system?
