I have what I believe is an early '97 MM 5.0. Later this morning, I can double check the build date. I need to know 3 things about this engine. I already know one of the three things.
1) millimeters of the MAF sensor
2) millimeters of the throttle body
3) pounds of the injectors. They are 19# injectors from the factory

I also need to know all of this for a 1999 Crown Victoria however I wouldn't expect anyone here to know that. I can ask at the Crown Victoria Forum. Thanks in advance and in a couple of hours I can get the build date of the Mountaineer. I'm pretty sure that is the earliest run of the 5.0 in the Mountaineers and Explorers. Thanks.

The 5.0 started in 96 in the Explorer, I think only in 2wd. 97 it was in both the Mountaineer and Explorer, and AWD appeared.

I had a 96 explorer awd

Yes 19lb injectors all 96-01 5.0 use 19lb injectors this means at the rated rail pressure psi they will deliver 19lb of fuel per hour

96-97 use 42 psi return system (orange)
98-01’use 64 psi returnless (white)

Still 19# injectors

@Mbrooks420 @410Fortune I looked at my sticker on the door of the MM and it was built 3/96, so that makes it a 96.5 Mountaineer. RockAuto has 1997 as the first year of the Mountaineer. I always assumed that it was the first year for the 5.0 in the Explorer. I had ask a questions 4 plus years ago and didn't remember asking when serveral of you including Jamie posted alot of information about the Explorer 5.0 history. That time frame was pre-stroke for me so I didn't immediately recollect. Here is that link. I'm still looking for MAF and throttlebody millimeters for my 96.5 5.0.

Does your 96.5 have the round airbox or square

@410Fortune Round and the MAF in it looks a hair bigger than 65mm. When I get to the shop, I'm going to measure the '97 MM throttle body and measure the one on the 1999 Crown Victoria to compare. They look the same. Remember that my latest plan is to use the 1999 Crown Victoria harness and PCM to get started on the coil-near-plug conversion on the MM 5.0 engine

@410Fortune @Mbrooks420 Is the round filter the first rendition of the 5.0 in an Explorer? I measured the throttle bodies. Because the taper is wider than the flapper, throttle blade, I was getting 68mm on the Explorer which is probably 65mm. The Crown Vic is a little smaller. My measuring device wont reach in far enough to measure in the straight section. I suppose that it all doesn't matter too much since some tuning may be neccessary for the 4.6 PCM to run the 5.0 (4.95). I'll need to install an additional O2 bung near the upper O2 sensor to install a wideband 4 wire sensor to hook to a standalone AFR gauge. I headed back out to the project to remove 3+ year old fuel that I overlooked removing 3 years ago. Hands on the project instead of hands on the keyboard. Thanks for y'alls input.

I just found a YouTube video of a 1996 Explorer 5.0 and in the video I can see a round air filter container. I can see that I need to add some mesh over the inlet hole to keep wasp and mice out. Also, a K&N filter element would be a good addition. I was able to remove 3 gallons of old fuel, 2 quarts at a time. I let the pump rest 5 minutes every half a gallon. It sounded like it in good shape and for 3-year-old fuel, it smelled ok and had yellowed. I feel better getting the old fuel out of there. In a couple of months, I will be back on this project. Many other things going on currently.
Maybe not on the K&N filter. I can buy 5 paper filters for the price of one . I haven't ever thought to keep an eye out for a K&N filter at a salvage yard. K&N filter

My 98s (both early builds) have the flat panel. My 1996 had the round filter.

My jeep has a K&N, I'd never own another. Someone on this forum posted about air filters, there's a dry foam filter that works better that is reusable.

Amsoil/ injen make nice dry filters

Afe has a whole new
Line of dry and oiled filters

I will never run another k&n the oil attracts dirt and can also get all over intake sensors
I live in the mud, dirt and dust I four wheel everyday just to get home
Amsoil dry filter with a pre filter is the only way to go! I only have to clean my filter twice a year the pre filter does much of the work keeping the mudd and slush off my filter element

The early round airbox is okay, I prefer the later model (97-01) square box with the detachable mas

For most builds I suggest using the factory airbox, modified if needed, run a good flat panel filter. Or build a true cold air setup with open element, take steps to feed it cold air and block it from the heat of the engine/exhaust
Usually it ends up looking something like an airbox, so after years of this we end up going full circle back to the factory airbox modded for more airflow
