1997 What's my transfer case issue - front drive shaft rattles at input

I have a 1997 sohc explorer sport.

I have no front wheel drive. In the rain, the rear wheels spin, but no traction from the front wheels.

I jacked up the car, rear wheels spin, front wheels were still. there was a loud rattle from where the front drive shaft connects to the transfer case. When I grab that front drive shaft just before the transfer case connection and shake it, I can confirm the noise is there, very loud rattle.

So - what's broken in there?

You'll want to read this "How To" rebuild thread to see how the transfer case works. The fact that the drive shaft isn't turning at all would indicate the problem lies within the transfer case and not at the junction of the drive shaft and transfer case output shaft.
