1997 explorer xlt
Hello, first time explorer owner, Ford owner for life. Just picked up a 1997 XLT loaded with options. Quite a few small problems to figure out but we will get there.

Intermittent tach, thinking viscous drive is going on transfer case. Haven't diagnosed yet. The rest is pretty much going to be maintenance issues.

Ahhh, so your lucky enough to have a V8 at least.

3 main options for the transfer case. Used, rebuilt, and swap in a BW4406 using F150/Expedition parts. Pretty common swap, but where I live the AWD is preferable to me.

I've searched online and found replacement couplers pretty reasonable. Don't look too hard to swap out. But the fuel mileage gain is enticing for the 4406 swap.

Naw, the cases are pretty basic. Easy to drop as well. Your prop shaft is probably due for a rebuild if the case is worn out.

Drive shafts are no problem for me. I work in a machine shop that builds shafts. Everything thing looks straight forward, just cutting the hole for the shifter right and sealing it up

Welcome.
