Just bought a 98 Eddie Bauer 4X4, it has the 4.0SOHC engine. When driving between 25 and 50mph there is a roaring noise that sounds like it is coming from the front of the vehicle. If I'm coasting, the noise disappears, put my foot on the gas, it comes back. The noise goes away at speeds over 55. Sounds like it could be a pinion bearing in the front diff and I was wondering what you guys thought and if anyone has had this problem?? I've owned several Explorers and have never had this kind of issue. One other thing I noticed is that under moderate to heavy acceleration there is some type of vibration, but only under above average acceleration. I'm thinking these 2 problems could be related, but, the vibration seems like it could be bad driveshaft universal joints. This is a 4X4, not AWD model. Any ideas on where to start?? Anyone else that has had this problem??
