1998 Explorer 5.0 “Restoration2021” project

The danger here is once he's done is he REALLY going to be able to give the Explorer up knowing how sweet it's now setup ....?
Yeah, that’s definitely gonna be the issue… I like it already.

Since I brought up custom exhaust on a 5.0 EX i figured I'd post this thread in case anyone stumbles onto this thread.

Got the timing cover off today.

No broken bolts!
Those 2 long ones suggest replacements.
Good call to replace the stat and pump.
That crank snout looks like no wear as well.
Excuse me if I'm being Captain Obvious, but be sure to run the garden hose into the bottom of the radiator when upside down, and use a pick to dislodge sand between the ribs then comb it.--Desert sand...
Getting the feeling your not going to stop until this looks showroom!

For as used as the rest of the rig appeared, that engine looks strong

All good points. I was on the fence a day ago about whether or not to do the water pump and timing chain. Now I'm glad that I did. In fact there was one broken long bolt. the head was broken off before I got there. Another long bolt wasn't even screwed in all the way. Had 1/2" between the bolt head and the cover. New bolts are in hand. Tomorrow should be able to get the pan off and get it and the W/P job done. That will be a relief. Will definitely clean the radiator. As far as being showroom, I won't have the budget for paint. Maybe my daughter can get it wrapped or painted. But I'll be handing off a fully functional and reliable vehicle. Which is the goal. And I need to get it done in the next couple weeks!!

You can do it!

Here is a short video of the sloppy timing chain.

Let me guess,
The loosey was at 10:00?

I'm pretty excited about it. Can't wait to take it for a nice drive when I'm done.

Lots of area to breath there
Last time I was heading into Vegas, we were in a Vette Z06
135-140 w/ lots of horsies just waiting to be unleashed
Sorry, might I digress....
