I drove My 1999 4.0 to work this morning and noticed after about 5 miles it started idling high and when I got to work and put it in park it would surge to 2k rpm and then almost die then back to 2k,,so i shut it down and tried to start it and it wouldn't start, went back out at lunch 4 hours later and it started still ran a little rough,,, after work it started and I drove home and it started the same thing all over,,Help

Thanks
I did check out a lot of those post but now I have a bigger problem...it won't even start now, I have 55 psi fuel and using a timing light I have spark AT ALL THE PLUGS
I only took out one spark plug to test compression and it was at 95..... so i am lost....

It is the SOHC V6 and I was just going by what I saw on a youtube video that said the procedure was ( since it wouldn't start ) to turn the key on 3 times and check the pressure
I also took a plug out and it was wet with gas

check another cylinder

I suggest that you check the compression on another cylinder in the same bank as the first one checked. Low compression on all cylinders in one bank usually means a slipped timing chain for that bank. How many miles are on the odometer?

If the plugs are wet with gas it could be the MAF. A dirty/failed MAF could indicate a false reading and give a low reading and run lean or a high reading and flood the thing. Give it a clean and report back. Also... If you cant start it and suspect its flooded just hold the pedal to the floor, key off engine off. then crank it, it sends a clear flood mode to the computer... Should start right up.

I just got a chance to get back to work on my 99explorer
So...I went ahead and bought a new maf and a new Idle control still nothing.
it does seem like it is flooding and I had a friend ask me to check the oil and see if is over full and it is so he said I am getting gas in the oil and it could be because of the fuel Regulator ...anyone have any ideas?

fuel pressure damper

Your 1999 Explorer has a returnless fuel system with the fuel pressure regulator in the fuel tank. The thing on the fuel rail is a fuel pressure damper. However, it does contain a diaphragm and has a connection to the intake manifold vacuum. If the diaphragm is cracked then fuel can leak thru it and get sucked into the intake manifold. You can test the diaphragm with a hand vacuum pump to see if it holds vacuum. Or you can just pressurize the fuel rail and see if fuel leaks out of the fuel pressure damper vacuum port.
