Hi all...I bought this 99 explorer with no remote. I want to buy a remote on ebay and program it. This car also came with only 1 key. Do I need more than 1 key to program a remote? Will a remote even work on my car? I do have the anti theft system which I guess is standard.
Thanks
Barry

I think all 99s have the anti theft system. Does yours have a small red light that flashes on the dash after turning off the truck?

first question: did you buy it at a ford dealer?
if the answer is yes then hit them up for some free remotes cause we all have them laying around otherwise they're about $50 at the parts counter(my personal opinion, if you didn't buy it at a dealer, goto to the used car dept and talk to a salesmen, they'll have one or more in their desks that they'l be willing to part w/ cheaper - i've sold used ones for $20ea and what my boss doesn't know won'y hurt me), on the issue of the key - if it's the fat head key then you must go to the dealership to have you cut and programmed, again if you purchased your x from a ford dealer hit them up for a free key cause it's a ford survey requirment that all ford products sold at a ford/linc/merc dealership new or used come w/ 2 sets of keys. otherwise you'll probably get tagged appx $30 for the key and appx $32.50 labor for the programming(they'll need to hook your x upto the ngs computer to access the program, appx 1/2hr labor), as for the remote if you get one at the same time as the key the dealer should program it for free, that only takes a couple of sec's.

My car does have the blinking red light but I bought it from an auction dealer that had no clue. Kinda sounds like I can use the remote but need to go to the dealer for another key!!???

to be able to program keys yourself the 99's usually require two programmed keys to be able to program a third(ford logic-if you lose a key, they'll require that you find it to be able to program a replacement, otherwise you have to go to the dealer and have them program it), on the subject of remotes, though being very common they were not std equip., they 're usually included in the conveinience group pkg(option), which typically gave you tilt wheel and criuse also, i can walk you through programming remotes it's simple.

p.s. how much are they on ebay, and by the way you want the type 6 remote (ford part # F8DB-15K601-**)

By the way, the Ford logic in requiring 2 working keys to program a third is so that your local valet driver doesn't make a spare key to your Explorer when you go out for a nice dinner, only to remove your Explorer from your property some time in the future. Same goes with repair shops. It makes it much more difficult to copy your key.

Todd...thanks so much for taking the time to respond. well guess what, I don't have tilt or cruise!!!! Sounds like that may eliminate me from the running unless I buy the entire remote kit which I have seen on ebay for 100+-! The rmote itself I have found on ebaymotors for all prices....but I think you can get the factory one for 10 bucks or so..... If you think I may still have the capabilty of remote...let me know...I guess I can call the dealer to find out for sure.

by the way - i was was being sarcastic, as a ford salesperson i see these customers at least once a week and i feel for them when they find themselves in this position(reguardless of where they bought their vehicle), cause i think it's ridiculous to have to spend $65.00 on a stupid key.:nono:

you may still have the ability for a remote, that was just the most common pkg to include it, at ten bucks if you want to take a chance, here's how to program them:

cycle ignition from off to run 8 times within 10 seconds, ending in run, all doors will lock then unlock to confirm programming mode. press any button on the 1st remote transmitter, door locks will cycle to confirm programming, press any button on the second transmitter(upto 4 transmitters total possible). turn ignition to off, locks will again cycle to indicate end of programming mode.

good luck

Todd..thannks again...I will let you know how it turns out!

Barry, you can also use Todd's suggestion to determine whether or not yours has remote capability before shelling out the $ for a remote. If your locks do not cycle then yours does not have the ability so i wouldn't buy the remote.

I'm wondering if that "keypad-keyless entry/remote entry" still applies. I'm pretty sure that '95-'97 Explorers require you to have keypad entry in order to have remotes for your truck. If you don't have the keypad on the door, you don't have remote-entry system. Can someone clarify because I'm not 100% sure?

Thanks everyone....well, I don't have the system, that has become very clear. I have seen them on the web so I may purchase at some point. Then I will be bugging you all on how to install!
