1999 mountaineer 4x4 replacing automatic transmission

My transmission seems to be failing I am experiencing problems with the transmission not shifting until I let off the gas and the over drive light on the dash is flashing. Does the flashing indicate there is a fault code?
How hard of a job is it to replace on a 4x4?
