2006 Ford Explorer
My wife drives a 2006 explorer it has been paid for for awhile and I want to keep it going and keep it reliable. I had the tranny fluid changed at 85000 and the guy said he was surprised that I hadn't had to rebuild this tranny yet. My wife has been noticing small problems and she is worried that it will leave her on the side of the road. The things we noticed are a big clunk when going from park to reverse, it sometimes reves when coming to a stop, the ocasional hard down shift, and it just feels crappy and bogged down going from 3rd to 4th. I have done searches and seen some of these problems in searches but if I rebuild the transmission are there updated fixes to make these transmissions run smooth or anything I can do to correct these problems without a rebuild.

Try the transmissions section, lots of info posted over there. Also, what transmission do you have the six speed or the five?

Since the Explorer has 2 different engine and transmission combinations (V6 vs V8), its important to identify which one you have. The more info you can provide, the easier it will be for the many knowledgeable folks here to offer assistance.

Who changed the fluid? (trans shop, dealer, corner garage, etc)
Was it a flush or pan drop & filter change?
When was this service done, whats the mileage now?

AND............ welcome to the site.

Sorry 2006 V6 2wd I don't know if it's 5 or 6 speed I've never really paid attention to that or knew there were two different ones. Local shop did the work not manny here in my town they are not a tranny specialist but do a little of everything they came recommended by everyone as fair honest and accurate pan drop and filter change not a full flush

I have a friends 2007 4.0 sohc, dont know 5 or 6 gears. but its sluggish from drive to reverse when i tested it and slipped only once around 2nd he says it does it all the time couldnt believe it didnt do it more while i was driving it. i am trying to help him in research to possibly save it, its never had a fluid change and its got 81k. i figured it was low fluid, but now im having doubts, its also loosing coolant.

update: from my research so far it looks like it maybe a 5R55W or 5R55S trans. its not listed in the trans and TC section..
I have now just done a search in the tranny section and seeing results, now to sift through it

You did not tell me its loosing coolant that could be a heater core head job or other related BS

yeah its really slow, im going to have to try to find it, thinking most likely a cracked radiator or bad coolant cap, gotta look, wont know till then. at the least he was told radiator, but he really hasnt had any really helpful help

First post!

I have a 2007 EB with 4.0 and 5-speed. Bought it used with 78k. It's my 3rd X and I love them with over 200k on first 2. Never had a tranny problem. This one isn't a smooth shifter, and occasionally clunks when shifting into reverse. Is there a suitable additive to add to tranny? Is this a symbol of low fluid (how can I check with no dipstick?) or something more serious? Please someone, tell me I don't need a rebuild or replacement!

Kirk

Kirk - Go to the transmission section. There is a sticky regarding 5R55w & e procedures. Check the fluid fill article. Your 5R55s uses the same procedure & fill tool as the 5r55w.

OP - looks like your post was hi-jacked. Since a local shop did your fluid change, you might have them re-check the fluid level. And its imperative that they used Mercon V . (not regular mercon) Was this indicated on your receipt?
