Has anyone ever tried making shackles?The right steel and maybe a homemade jig, why not right?

What is your objective?

Are you wanting to get bigger tires? How big?

Search f150 coil spacers for the front, $60 at dealer, $20 at junkyard. Get 1.5 inches of lift, takes an hour to do. You will need an alignment after, so add that to the cost.

Warn 153 shackles for the rear. $70 on ebay (est) takes an hour to install yourself.

$200, and your lifted enough for 31" mudders! Now go wheeling and enjoy your rig like you never have before!

hey im a little new to the car world but i have a 91 explorer stock and i want to put 33" or 35" mudders on it and i was curious as to how high id need to raise it to get them on. do you think a 2" front leveling liftit w/ stud extensions would get it there? thanks

Jimmydean, it would take 4-6" lift to clear 33 or 35s. More importantly, you would need to regear both axles to run tires in that size range.

For 35" tires, it also requires some fender trimming for them to clear. I had a 5+ inch lift in my 1994 Explorer and had to cut the back and front of the front fender tire wells. Also had to beat on the front of the rear tire well behind the rear doors to keep the tires from rubbing. They still rub on the rear at full stuff, but its smooth and doesn't damage anything.

You will also have alignment issues. The general opinion on the board is the TTB can only be aligned up to about 6" in lift. After that, its cut and turned beams.

If you search this forum, you should have all your questions answered. 33-35" tires with a first generation Explorer has been done and documented numerous times.
