O'kay this may be a bit long winded, but I want to give you all the information I have. About two weeks ago my '01 sport trac wouldn't start. Leaving work I turned the key and heard one big click then nothing. On the second try it started right up no problems ran just fine. Next morning we go to work no problems. Again, leaving work, one big click then nothing. This time we needed a jump, she fired right up and ran fine. Stopped by Autozone to check the battery and alternator both fine couldn't get to the starter but it was running good and we weren't too worried. One more stop on the way home no trouble restarting all seemed right with the world. An hour or so after getting home we tried starting again and nothing but the click. I see the serpentine belt is only moving an inch or so then nothing. We decide to replace the battery...nothing. Noticed some corrosion on the terminals just to be safe replaced those to. This time she started easily three or four times in a row.
Problem solved? Of course not. A couple of hours later. one big click.
Took it mechanic #1: New starter. He noticed the wires to the old starter were getting "red hot" with the new starter they got "pretty warm", no start.
He is at a loss with electrical issues sends us to the shop next door.
Mechanic #2 checks fuses and relays, pulls a spark plug to check for coolant, and "strong arms" the engine. He says it will backwards but not forwards and it must be the timing chain. We wait a week for his estimate when we don't hear from him we go to the shop. Now he says the engine is locked up and he can't pull it because he doesn't have the equipment in his three bay garage, and we should take it to an engine shop. Probably, $4oo later the problem is the same and no one knows any more about it than two weeks ago when all this began. The only issue prior to no start was a rowdy A/C compressor. Only new issue is rear passenger window doesn't roll down. I don't know if those two things are related to the no start but. like I said. I wanted to give you all the information I have. We just hope to get an idea of where to go next. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

damned it!
I thought there would be some sexy pics of 2 girls, 1 sport trac.....

anyways

the click is the starter solenoid giving the starter power (maybe)
the contacts may be corroded in it (possibly replace solenoid)
the other possibility is a loose/bad ground connection on the engine (from battery)

check to make sure power wires on starter, and solenoid are tight too, disconnect ground on battery before tightening or there may be big sparks.

Doesnt sound like the starter since the engine turns over just slightly. Was the engine making any odd sounds before this starting problem started?

Perv!!:notworthy

No noise before no start. Ford dealer says it may be the transmission. At $110 an hour they won't be the ones to fix the problem. We are now on our fifth mechanic who is looking at the torque converter. I have never had this kind of trouble finding a mechanic before.

- no-start condition caused by transmission??
weird

yea, i opened looking for pics....

i noticed you said mechanic number 2 said its locked up. is this thing actually seized now?

im not all that familiar with this trans. if it has a lock up converter that is locked when it shouldnt be that in theory could cause what your describing. place the transmision in neutral as oposed to park and then try and start it.

wow this thread got weirder and weirder as i read it. ok so my ST is having similar problems like i get in the car turn the ignition switch then nothing happens.. just dead silence so i figured wiggling it up into park a little bit more and that works sometimes. but why i quoted this post is because when i put it into neutral it cranks perfect every time sometimes a putter.

well it could be the gear position indicator,
the truck/ any auto transmission car for that matter should start in park and neutral.

Here it is

Turns out A/C compressor locked up. Some how got broken and twisted and caused the initial no start. At some point during the first four mechanics all of the spark plugs were loosened, several of the fuses were blown, and all of the cranking had created TAR in the engine made of gas, oil, and pieces of metal. A relatively simple problem became nearly a grand to repair. One word of advice... Be very careful about who works on your Trac and if what they are telling you just doesn't sound right.....RUN! Not only did these guys charge me for not fixing anything they charged me for making it worse. Thanks to every one who had a suggestion, I think we tried them all.

A good and honest mechanic is very hard to find at least in Miami FL it is. This is why I fix my truck myself or my brother-in-law helps me out (he is not an auto mechanic but he is a mechanic).

Glad to hear you finally got the problem resolved.
