Hey guys, New to the forums. Been prowling for some time now, and finally joined. I've been searching the forums trying to find a previous thread related to this issue but havnt found anything close enough. Ok, the dirt-

I have a 1993 explorer 4x4 with the original a4ld tranny. It does have over 200,000 miles, which from what i read about this tranny, Is a miracle. Not too long ago, when it was cold, it would take a little while to engage into drive. You'd have to wait for it to warm up. I did the research and checked the modulator valve which everyone recommends first. BINGO! atf in the line. went ahead and replaced that and now it engages instantly, every time, even when cold. It seemed like a pressure issue so i dont know how the modulator did anything but hey it worked.... sorta....

A new problem has arised that has me stumped. A little while after putting the new modulator on, it likes to bang into drive. you put it into reverse no problem, reverse out the garage, put it into drive and it sorta bangs into drive after a small delay. The funny thing is, it only ever does it when cold, and when going into drive. once its warmed up the thing pulls like a champ, goes through every gear perfect, downshifts like it should and never bangs, jumps, pops into gear again..... until its cold. All other posts ive found have a constant banging into gear wether cold or warm and its both reverse or dr. What can be causing this characteristic? It has to be fluid related right? since warm fluid changes it?

Oh, and so i dont waste your time, Fresh tranny fluid, new filter. Fluid is clean and the old fluid was a beautiful red color. not burnt or anything. Fluid level is where it should be. No tranny fluid leaks at all, not a single drop from the bell housing to the extension housing. Its as tight as a submarine. Thanks!

Hey Shane, welcome to the site.

Is your idle high? Fluid level is right? If not, you may have loose u-joints causing the bang. If it's not that I would wonder about your VB, especially where you have 200000 miles. May be time to replace it with a rebuilt, or rebuild it yourself. Glacier's rebuild thread is very good. Oh, have you adjusted the bands ever? Easy and a necessary part of owning this transmission.

There is a troubleshooting section in the ATSG manual. PM me your email and I will send it to you if you like.

Welcome to this forum! Did you use a wire brush to clean out the bore where the pin from the modulator rides? Did you use Seafoam on the vacuum line going into the modulator? Does the new modulator have an adjustment?

Hi, Idle seems to be alright, The modulator is not adjustable, i didnt clean in the bore but i did clean around it reall good before removing it. I started the car with the vaccum line off to allow it to suck up any remaining fluid and i got good vaccum when i put my finger over it. I think i will rebuild the valve body just to be safe. I ordered the transgo shift kit, updated boost valve with o ring, and reverse servo d-ring kit. Is there a thread to adjust bands? i garuntee they never have been adjusted... Thanks guys!
