My 130 Amp alternator (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139789&highlight=130+amp+alternator ) started to not make the grade ( outputting low voltage ) consequently I ordered a new 200 amp alternator from Mr. Alternator ( http://www.mralternator.com/ ). And as you would expect it just had to be powder coated red to match my other under hood components. The price was $275.00 to my door. This company is easy to deal with and they eventually answer all e mail questions; even though shipping was sluggish and I never received any tracking data.

When using a high amp output alternator, one needs to upgrade the wiring. In my case it was not necessary seeing as I had previously upgraded the “big 3” wires ( http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152430&highlight=alternator+wiring ) on my truck.

In view of the fact that I used an overdrive pulley ( smaller in diameter than stock pulley ) on the old alternator ( http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1406278#post1406278 ), I moved the overdrive pulley to the new alternator.

The installation is exactly like that of my 130 amp alternator as detailed in the following thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139789&highlight=130+amp+alternator .

The installation took 25 minutes ( including removal of the old alternator and the pulley swap ).

The new alternator puts out 13.4v at idle and 13.4v at 1200 RPMs. A short road test showed 13.4v while cruising at 70 MPH with the AC and lights switched on.

The new alternator unquestionably puts out the juice in addition to adding some under hood bling bling.

Note: the powder coating quality, while very nice, is no where as nice as that of Jon Smith ( jtsmith ).

Good for you Al, more new parts are peace of mind. Do you recall what the overdrive pulley was for the alternator? I got mine from the place recommended by Bull Dog etc, and I had an alignment issue. It could have been my alternator, but I would prefer to use a different pulley maker next time.

I'm about to swap engines in my V8 truck, and the crank pulley will be a good bit smaller, under 5" instead of 5.75" or so stock. Aren't the overdrive pulleys for the alternator about the same 25%?

Nice-
Mind if I ask the additional charge for coating?
Those things are fairly difficult to disassamble.
That is why only the front case is coated I imagine.

Well that pulley is gold, I thought that you used the red one still. Are both of those smaller than stock, where did the gold one come from?

It was $25 extra for the red powder coating.

The gold one in the pic is from the new alternator laying on top of the old; the red one ( which is hardley red anymore by the way ) was swapped to the new 200 amp red alternator.

I thought that might be the case, the gold one looks much like my original new alternator.

I noticed a 4g. You know I bet a 3g would work better for you. too late now. I get 3g's from the junk yard and beef them up with the "overdrive" pulley. The overdrive pulley comes off of any 1999 or later taurus. The 3g is rated to 15,000 rpm, I am sure the 4g is pretty close to the same.

fuse?

Want to upgrade my alternator wiring with bigger wire. With factory alternator at the moment, what should I fuse the wire for? My alternator is 130amp and not sure yet if I'll upgrade it. Big wire for frame to ground on battery (done), power from alternator to relay (fuse?) and what was the third? body to ground on battery?
