Hey there, I have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT. Bought it in 2004 and the rear hatch has always made a binding sound that originates from the hinges. Fast forward to 2000 and the hatch no longer lines up with the opening to allow the hatch to close in place as it once did. The hatch seems to ride about an inch above the roof line. Only the left side of the door engages with the latch. I paid a body shop to install new hinges and it had no effect on the alignment of the door. Wondering if anyone here has experienced this and how they resolved the issue. I've included 6 pics of the situation. Hoping to repair this before the snow flies. Thanks in advance

Remove the two lift supports and hold up the hatch with a long rod. See if the hinges are rusted out or just became misaligned. If the latter, get somebody to help you re-adjust the hinges. If rusted then you're looking at a new hatch or some welding on the body where the hinges attach. The hinges could also be bent so check that as well.

My 2000 Mountaineer has the same problem yours does, have tried adjusting the hinges on the hatch but no success, I think maybe the hinges themselves could be sprung a little but haven't went into it any further, good luck with solving the problem.

the spot welds on the hatch to hinge attachment get weak and tear over time so it wont line up no more

I hate the hatches on 2nd gens I've always had to slam mine to get to shut. I think it's a 2nd gen thing.

Here is how a couple members fixed this problem
