I bought a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer yesterday. It really hadn't been well taken care of, but I didnt pay much for it either. The rear end was grinding badly, so I took it apart to find basically the bearings and housing was runined. Now I am searching for a whole rearend. What years, models will be an exact bolt in swap? I assume 98-01 explorer, and mountaineer?

Thanks in advance.

2000 mountaineer, 6cyl awd.

Any 4DR Explorer up to 2001 or Sport 2DR up to 2003 will bolt right in mechanically. But pre-1995 and some 1995 ones I think will have drum brakes in the rear instead of disc, so you'll want to get 1995 or newer so you still have disc brakes. Since it's Awd you need to get a rear with the same gearing as the one you have now so it matches the front end.
