2000 XLS rear hatch won't open

I have a 2000 XLS and the rear hatch is giving me fits. It will open once in a while and then won't open. I have absolutely no idea why it will work one time and then not the next. I was just outside and tried to get it open. Several dozen cycles of the power switch did not work. Since I have had the vehicle the rear window button has always stuck in and I was never sure how it was supposed to work. Does the button stay in, or is it supposed to pop out. When I put a key in it will not turn, but the button will slowly pop out. I sprayed some WD40 in and around it and it now pops out when I hit the power lock button. Are you suppposed to be able to unlock the hatch and window from the rear, or just the window?

Same exact thing happened to my tailgate, but only once. I had everything unlocked and pulling the lever did absolutely nothing. I tried again and again, locking and unlocking, to get it to work to no avail. So after i got back home, i tried it again, and it worked fine. Anyone know what this is about? I know for a fact everything was unlocked, so I'm positive it wasnt my stupidity..
