2000 XLT Tranny, bad gasket?

Ok, I just changed the oil in my dads 2000 XLT SOHC, while under there after taking the oil plug out and waiting for it to drip the remains of oil, I looked at the tranny and the front of the transmission pan is all greasy, the motor is clean underneath except for the usual dust/dirt, but this is only at the front of the tranny you guys know the transmission thats in this I don't could this possibly be a bad gasket in the transmission pan? And I turned it over after putting fresh oil in it to make sure no leaks. and besides the transmission is his motor known for the timing chain tensioner issue? Because recently its been ticking like near the bottom end and it takes 3 cranks for it to start. Thanks for the Answers guys!

Clean everything thoroughly, then check to see where the leak is coming from. It could be the gasket, front, seal or possibly something else.

Brake cleaner should work right?

Even a dry rag would work. You don't have to make it spotless. Make it dry to see where the leak might be coming from. It would show a run mark.
