2001 3.0L Ford Ranger popping through the intake, and runs poorly.

yes i have a 2001 ford ranger with a 3.0 and it has 230,000 miles on it and has ran good up until this point. i have noticed and lack of power when the engine is under a load like pulling hills. and if you put it to the floor it will run better but the will make a constant "poping" noise through the intake. could it be a loose timing chain?? or a lob off the cam? any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks again for your time.

Also check the air intake tube for leaks or cracks.
And the PCV valve and associated plumbing.
