Is there a way to tell from the VIN or by visual inspection if a 2001 Mountaineer V8 is AWD or 2D? I tried Ford Fleet's VIN decoder and it gave some useful information, but nothing about the transmission type.

Thanks.

AWD or 2WD is actually referring to the transfer case... or lack thereof. It is true that the tail shaft of the transmissions are different, but the easiest way to tell if it is AWD or 2WD is to simply look under the front for the presence of a differential, CV shafts, a driveshaft, or even for the transfer case itself. Although the transfer case will be located to the rear of the transmission. If the vehicle has any of the above mentioned parts, it should have all of them.

That makes perfect sense. I'll take a look when I get home tonight.

Many thanks for the quick and helpful answer to my question.
