2001 ranger - transmission overheats after about 60 miles

2001 ranger 4.0 4x4 4r554 transmission overheated after about 60 miles. would move after cooling down, but fluid is smelly and brown. Started being slow in reverse during cold weather. Let it run a minute, and it would do fine. Has been doing same thing in reverse all the time lately. I know something is messed up. any clues as to what happened? 82000 miles.

Welcome to this forum! Install a larger cooler, and replace the filter & fluid. Check the fan clutch, coolant level, and the thermostat.
