Posting for some help w/ my Dad's 2001 sport. When starting the last couple weeks, it has died and he's had to start 2-3 times and then it starts running. On my mustang, this would signal that my fuel pumps about to crap out, but he just brought it in for the 60k check and the dealership said they won't even drop the tank until the fuel pump dies. Anybody had similar problems?

This is just a hunch, but ask him to use the other key when he starts it, and see if the problem persists.

If it starts OK with the other key, the problem is in the PATS system.

What is the PATS system?

Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS). Each key has a unique chip inside that is recognized by the computer. If the key has been programed into the computer, the engine will start. It's actually a pretty good theft deterrent.

If a particular key has been damaged or subjected to a strong magnetic field, it may not work correctly. This is just a hunch, but would be the first thing to check.
