Alright, My dad works at a ford dealership, but he is leaving this decision pretty much up to me. Someone just traded in an 01 ST xlt. Its loaded on the inside moon roof, leather, blah blah blah. the problem is: 1. it has 165000 miles on it 2. the drivers seat and center console armrest need recovered 3. it needs a good cleaning 4. the biggest problem of all, the guy lost his inner axles while driving and it needs a whole new rear axle. I havent actually seen it yet and his work hasnt given him an actual price yet but he said they gave the guy around 2 grand for trade in and he didnt expect them to give him a price over 2500. it is 4wd. do you guys think this is worth it? or am i biting off more than i can chew you think?

I'd hit that for sure if I was you. I'm not sure what you mean by inner axles on the rear.... You can pick up an axle for $250-$350 and work on the cosmetics as you can. Front VC axles are $75-$150 depending on the brand and purchase place.

Sounds pretty beat up to me, I'd pass if you're looking for a daily driver.

all you see on the rear axle is the axle tube or whatever its called, inside there is an inner axle holding everything in. those came out and the axle tube hit the pavement.

Hmmmm, C clips must of come out or broke somehow. Maybe someone did some work on the axle and forgot to put the C clips back in.

A 9 year old vehicle with 9 year old leather seats and a bad arm rest .........How does that translate into " pretty beat up" there 0307? I've seen axles come out of vehicles with a whole lot less that 165000 miles.

thats what he said c clips I forgot to put that in there. and its 8 years old going on 9, by the way.

11 Steve? Don't make my truck older than it is. :D My 01 Sport Trac will be 10 years old next March.

Oh yeah, another nick pick. lol There was no XLT models until 03.

But that truck sounds like mine. Mine has all the options except the subwoofer and tonneau cover. I think you can call what mine came with as having the Sport package. blah blah blah. :D

I need to call your wife Steve and start discussing getting you into an old folks home for Alzheimer victims. Don't worry, I can take good care of your Sport Tracs for you.

oh, i just assumed xlt because of the options. my bad.

No worries. The first 2 years of Sport Tracs didn't need no stinkin badges. lol

In 03 is when they started with a model badge. And changed it to chrome. I like the original Red/White Sport Trac badge.

I'm just saying that in my experience with cars, a beat up interior usually means the truck was neglected, add to it that the axles came out, keep in mind this has a disc break 8.8, so not only did the c-clips break, but it also needs to break the bolts off of the caliper brackets to fall off, not like the drum breaks where if the c-clip breaks the axle can slide out.

Also the fact that the previous owner only expected a max of $2500 for it would send a red flag to me that he knows it isn't in the greatest shape. Plus at 165000, the auto trans is probably getting close to going.

I'd only get it if I could talk to the previous owner and get some good info on how he treated it.

I think you are "cornfused". '01 & '02 Sport Tracs were not disc brake equipped...........

Anyways, go check it out.

It could be a good deal. Check the transmission fluid. Make sure it is nice and pink.

See if the check engine light is on. If on, find out what code it has. I'm sure the techs there can give you an idea of what would be wrong and needs fixing.

Listen for a rattle while it runs. These engines are famous for a timing chain rattle that is really expensive to repair.

Drum Brakes Rule!

BTW Steve, the red dangling thing in the middle of my pic is for you to kiss. :D
