I have been having issues with my 2001 sport trac 4x4 v6 sohc fuel inj. 132k mileage. The problem is I can jump in and it will start first try, fuel pump is heard activating, idle is rough, feels like truck is about to die, pumping on the gas usually causes it to catch and smooth out......after 10 mins. or sometimes less than that truck starts to sputter, step on throttle it dies faster, sometimes when stepping on throttle before it dies helps and truck is able to rev up and then back to idle and not die. But most times stepping on gas when it begins to sputter after running for 10 mins or so causes it to die once it dies it doesn't start back up and when key is turned on and off, no fuel pump activation noise.
I have scantool data take off a autel 619 saved to notebook text format. But have no idea how to post it here or if it is allowed. Any help is greatly appreciated, have a blessed day.

Those are my numbers for the scan tool, sorry so long, suggestions I have gotten so far are vacuum leak, failing fuel pump, bad o2 sensors, bad MAF.......so far replaced fuel filter and cleaned MAF.

Step 1 to me would be to test your battery, connections, and alternator. The jump may give it enough for the fuel pump to engage and start, but something may not be letting produce enough current to keep it going.

If you pull the battery and go to an autoparts store, they will test it and if good even charge it. That or swap out a known good battery. Measure the current at the battery. Then when you start it measure the current and see if you are getting enough from your alternator.

If you battery is good and you have enough current from the alternator, then the other problems will show, if any.

Thanks for the suggestion, brand new battery installed, alternator bench tested good, all wires/connections between battery and alternator good ground and current......still dies, its like its starving for gas when I feather the throttle, it bogs and then revs up and is fine for a bit, then truck just dies, and doesn't start back up again, when key is cycled on/off no fuel pump noise is heard, inertia switch is not tripped, gas in tank is 3/4 full.
I am at a loss for solutions based on the fact that the next day when I attempt to start the truck, cycle key on and fuel pump is heard.............and then the same routine all over again with the sputtering, and sometimes catching, sometimes not and dying out on me immediately when feathering throttle, and then not start again, and no fuel pump noise is heard from several cycles of the key.
But if I let it sit and come back the next day, same routine.

You need to do what I am doing today, then. Hooking up a fuel pressure tester and watching what the fuel pressure does when the symptom happens. I am trying to diagnose a fuel pressure problem too. Mine will stay running till I drive and put load on it.

I got a fuel pressure test kit from Autozone on their lender program Thursday but it was missing the part needed to test a Ford. I am going to buy one today.

Schrader valve (like a bicycle tube) is on the fire wall end of the passengers side fuel rail.

Good luck.

Your fuel trims and oxygen levels down the exhaust are way too high you probably have a vacuum leak somewhere

I bought the pressure test kit, and tested at the fuel rail.
I relieved pressure at the line via relay removal and turn engine over a few times, the hooked up tester to schrader valve, put relay back in, turned key, no fuel pump activation noise, gauge read 0psi, which is obvious given the absence of fuel pump activation noise.

Is it possible for a fuel pump to work sometimes and not work sometimes?
Can a vacuum leak cause a fuel pump to not activate/shut off?(I have the one line system, there is no return to the tank)

I usually leave it after it dies, and when I jump in the next day, turn the key, fuel pump is heard, truck starts......but will always sputter and die after about 10 minutes or so, sometimes sooner.
If it is a fuel pump that I need, anyone have any suggestions, like most here I am on a tight budget and any suggestions would be more than welcomed.......have a blessed day!

It is definitely possible to have intermittent fuel pump operation. I've replaced a bunch (6) faulty fuel pumps on 6 separate vehicles and almost every one of them suffered from intermittent operation. Most seem to be temperature sensitive, failing to function when cold, but working normally when warm. This is due to the motor brushes and their springs being worn and not making contact with the armature when cold.

When I picked up the fuel pressure test kit from Autozone it was missing a piece that pressed the schrader valve in. If you relieved pressure, hooked up the kit, got 0 psi, then removed the kit and were able to push in the schrader valve on the fuel rail and pressure relieved again, you did not get a good test. I had to go get a second kit to get a good test.

Also if the explorer started and you were showing 0 you were not getting a good test.

This may all be obvious, and if it is I am sorry. I just went thought getting the kit from Autozone and not getting a good read myself.

What you should do it pop off the engine side of the fuel filter and turn the key on and see if you're getting fuel out of it. The fuel pump obviously turns off once you get to a certain level of pressure but its worth a try to see if that fuel filter is clogged and is making it so only a tiny bit of fuel is getting to the rail (enough to start and idle) but the fuel filter is too clogged to let the full amount through. So I'd check that first. And then if not it could be a vacuum leak in which case I would go around the common gasket spots with starting fluid (be careful not to not get it on the exhaust manifold because it'll burn and explode). So first I'd suggest seeing if the fuel filter is okay and if not that then I'd look into vacuum leaks.

Thank you all for the suggestions, I will test at the fuel filter tomorrow as the pressure gauge I bought had the ford schrader adapter and an in line attachment to test after the filter as well as coming from the line minus the filter. I will post my findings here tomorrow, I am also wondering because it is an intermittent thing, could it be bad electrical connection in terms of continuity or power? I think I am gonna check those as well while I am under there. Again thank you for all your help guys, and have a blessed day!

Awesome that'll work well! And as far as the electrical problem, it's possible, but I doubt it. We'll see how the fuel system pressure checks go and then maybe it'll help solve your problem. If not of course there's no harm in checking the connections. Hopefully the pressure test works and we find it. If not I'll brainstorm a bit more.

Fuel Pressure test read 22 psi KOEO, couldn't get gauge to go any higher no matter how many times I cycled the key, and given the fact that my fuel filter is new, I am now looking for a new fuel pump, impressed with the original one as it did just what they said it would, it lasted 15 yrs., do you have any recommendations in terms of a replacement?

Hey koda, do you know if I can just remove the bed to change the fuel pump.....(2001 sport trac 4x4 job 1 vin E), or do I need to drop that tank in order to do the job?
Any suggestions/advice would be much appreciated, thank you, and have a blessed day!

If the ST is like most pickups removing the bed is fairly easy (4-6 bolts and some electrical connections for the tail lights) if you have some extra mussel around to lift it off, that may be easier. I dropped the tank to change mine, as I've done this job 5 other times on regular Explorers and have it down to about a 90 min job.

You can't do it by just removing the bed. There is an old thread here somewhere that shows the obstruction in the way. That being said, the person in that thread said removing the bed made it much easier to access the lines.
