Hi everyone,

I have the following vehicle:
Ford Explorer 2001
XLT AWD 5L V8 Engine all standard no customization
I am not sure if the transmission is a 4R70W
My questions are::exp:
1. Is there an easy way to tell which one I have?
2. Secondly when I start out in first gear the transmission will slip and then finally start moving? I have reviewed all the forums but have not been able to find any postings on this issue, only the common 2nd to 3rd issue with the valve body and solenoids.
3. I did have some transmission leakage and thought that was part of the problem but have fixed all the lines and refilled the transmission to the proper level.
4. If there is a thread that I missed please point me to that thread.

Any help would be appreciated :hammer:

My understanding is that all 5.0L V8's have 4R70W transmission.
Any help would be appreciated :hammer:

Bob, Thanks

Is there an easy way to identifie the 4R70W Transmision?

OK I have done alot more reading for the past two day's and have been taking the truck out for rideds to attempt to Issolate the slippage. This is what I have found.

"Yes I do have the 4R70W transmission."

1. If I start up slowly in first gear it does not appear to slip.
2. If I floor it that is when I get the slippage. (also once in a while it did not slip when I floored it)
3. If I put it in 2nd I don't get any slippage.
4. It does not appear to have any issues from 2nd to third or OD.
5. I drop it out of averdrive and it appears to down shift correctly.
6. I don't have any lights on the dash and I have not checked any pressures since this only appears in first gear. Could this be a filter issur?

THanks for any help. RFK

Im having the same thing about slipping in first if I get on it. (Sometimes) But im also having more problems like serious shudders and jerks so im just replacing mine.

You may have luck installing a "Valve Body Shift Kit"; it firms up the shifts alot, and has a couple other bonuses; I was reccomended to install one, but I dont think it would help my trans so much.
