My differential has been making noise for years. Has anyone replaced or rebuilt theirs? What's the best fix?

I'm taking the truck to have the cv axials replaced for the 2nd time and I was wondering if now would be a good time to fix the differential noise issue.

Any thoughts?

I'll let ya in on a secret. Find a good shop that does differentials and take it to them. We sell the complete unit for the 2002+ IRS rears and typically when we get their core back it was a bearing that was making the noise. Some people are spending 1000 bucks plus on a complete rear when they probably could have gotten the repair done for 250 bucks or so. If you need the complete unit or just the parts I've got them all in stock.

Really.

What about the cv axials? I've searched suppliers like Orielly's Auto Parts and they don't stock them. I've resorted to the dealership. Can I find the cv axials elsewhere?

They are hard to find..the only place I was able to get them for a good price is the salvage yards..If you can find a low mileage explorer it might be good thing for you right now..I know a lot of explorers are getting traded in for the CARS program.

I'm looking for the rear cv axials. I've checked with Advance Auto Parts but not Autozone.

thats great to hear, i've been suspecting that all along. Have you seen bad seals also with the bad bearing? I've been wondering if thats the clue as to which is bad or about to fail. . .and my front pinion seal is leaking. . .
How's the setups' been looking after a few miles? Any year better that others? So what your saying is the R&P is usually good and you don't need to change the setups? Getting a little close to DIY. . .hum

instructions

Guy's,

we need to rebuild a 2002 IRS here In Holland/Europe but we can't find the instructions with exact specifications, does any of you have these as PDF file or scanned?

I hope you can help us out,

Thanks,
Hennie

Before you go dropping a lot of cash.
Try a fluid change with Amsoil.
I had a nasty whine and now it is gone.

I'd go with whichever is cheaper, rebuild most likely.

I have a deafening noise in the front of my ranger 4x4. Sounds like a loud road tremmer. Any ideas/ wheel bearing or front differential? Tires have been ruled out. (rotated)

I'm confused on how you can possibly get a differential rebuilt for $250? Are you talking just parts or just very cheap labor?

I've gotten 3 quotes locally to rebuild my front differential and they are ALL in the ballpark of $1,100 for parts and labor. PLEASE tell me how I can get this done for $250 so I can save that kind of coin!
