2002 ford explorer back fires when I try to start it

I have a 2002 ford explorer that wont start. One day it died on me. Towed it home and found out there was no oil. I put oil in it and motor turns over but wont start and sounds like it is back firing. checked fuel rail and has gas.

Have you check the timing? It sounds like it may have skipped a tooth or broke a tensioner or chain/belt.

Would you be comfortable replacing your timing set? If it was running fine before and now it is backfireing(putting aside all issues dealing with it having run out of oil) I would either pull your valve covers and check for correct timing or pull the timing cover and check for play in the chain and check timing there
