2002 Ford Explorer. Gear shift broke off in my hand.

Hello, my father explorer (automatic) broke down today. This morning when he shift in reverse the handle gear came lose. I was wondering is there a way to manually shift the transmission to drive, so we can take it home or the mechanic and any suggestion of what went wrong and how to fix.
