Need some help from the vets. here on EF. My truck has a 4.0L EFI SOHC 6cyl and it is 2WD. I just wanted to know because I am a noob, can this be converted to a 4x4 and can the engine get a upgrade to put out more power.

You can convert and upgrade anything but in this case it would be EXPENSIVE. If you're not satisfied with your current Trac it would be cheaper to trade it in on an '07 or newer V8 4x4.

Do you actually plan to go offroad? Serious offroading? Or light offroading?

For light offroading the newer Sport Tracs 07+ would probably be ok. The newer ones are hard to lift and don't have a solid rear axle.

For serious offroading you would want the older ones 01-05 because they have a solid rear axle.

But yes, your 02 has all the mount holes for the 4x4 hardware. Here's a quick and dirty list of things you need to buy/replace and may not be complete...
- 2 4x4 Spindles
- 2 Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly-Front
- 2 CV Halfshafts
- 1 Front Dana35 IFS Axle
- 1 4x4 Transmission(auto or manual) **note - you could have your tranny modified with the rear 4x4 output but a transmission shop would have to do the work and it might cost you just as much as finding a used 4x4 transmission.
- 1 Front Driveshaft
- 1 Rear Driveshaft
- 1 BW1354 Manual Transfer Case(easiest to install) or BW1354 Electric Transfer Case and 4x4 module and switch.
Optional hardware...
- 1 transfer case skidplate
- 1 gas tank skidplate

As for engine performance for the 4.0L SOHC engine...
- Chip and tuner
- Exhaust headers
- Exhaust Y-pipe
- Performance muffler
- Performance intake system/filter(K&N??)
- Supercharger - they cost about $4000+

You could possible swap in an Explorer 5.0L engine. But you would need to look into if that would pass Emission testing in your area.

Possible? Yes.
Worth the time, effort, and expense? Probably not.

John let me be blunt....I want your truck lol. Yeah serious enough to go offroad but don't want it to not be street legal. And even though it probley be better to get a Newer model, I like the 02. Feel like I can do more with it.

350

Can a 350 engine fit inside a 2002 sport trac?

Yes, a 350 Chevy will fit in the bed. But there are people who will haul it off for free and not greasy up your Trac.

lol. Just a project i wanted to try. I love this truck, just hate all the tech in it. want to make it as old school as possible.

It's been done before. But, I know that might be a problem to pass emissions here in Houston. I don't know about San Antonio.

They still have emmissions testing in Texas man? They tried that crap for a few years in Florida but stopped after a few years, that was around the early 90's. They realized it didnt really have any affect on pollution. I used to never be able to get my old crappy (young and poor at the time) cars to pass that thing I had to throw the guy running the test $40 and they would pass me.

Where I live, if you have a check engine light, don't even bother taking it to the Testing place. It won't pass.

If you have ODBII vehicle they don't tail pipe your truck. They just plug into the computer link. And that reads your VIN. I'm pretty sure you may not pass if your computer VIN doesn't match your dash/insurance card VIN. And a 5.0L engine swap would cause you to change computers. I'm just speculating here.

Tonka Trac has a massively lifted 4x2 Trac with a 350 Chevy in it. Apparently emissions are not an issue where he lives.
