I noticed a tiny leak a couple weeks ago under my suv when I would fill it with gas. At the same time I started having issues actually filling the tank, the filler hose would back up after a couple seconds of pumping and shut the pump off. So I crawled under and started investigating the leak to find a very rusted fuel filler neck where the rubber hose attaches. I'm assuming it's rusted though and causing a blockage while pumping. I've tried without success to find a 2002 fuel filler neck from somewhere other than the dealership as I prefer not getting raped for a simple fix item. Can anyone out there point me in the direction of an aftermarket fuel filler neck? My local junkyards don't have an 02-05 explorers and I can only find the lower metal filler section online, I need the upper section. My next course of action is to just cut the 2" of rusted out pipe off and put a longer piece of rubber hose on to run up over the unrusted part. TIA for any help.

I checked my shop manuals and the section for the gas filler neck is referenced in a volume that I don't have. Sorry I couldn't be more help. You do, however, get a free bump. :D

I appreciate you looking. Silverstate has the ENTIRE hose, from fill neck all the way to the tank but it's $140. Which actually isn't too bad a price but would require me dropping the tank to replace it, soooo I picked up some fuel hose today and I'm going to see if I can just replace the 8" section of hose that connects both metal filler pipes and extend it over the metal filler neck. I'll just cut off a couple inches of the filler neck where it's rusted then hose clamp the hell out of it, if that doesn't work I'll break down and buy the whole line and drop the tank, give it a good cleaning while it's off. My fuel gauge has been acting up lately anyway so that'll be an excuse to go ahead and replace the fuel level sending unit too.

Good luck with the fix. Be sure to keep us updated.

I recently had to do this on my 99 ranger the vent side completely rusted through. Went to the local pull-a-part and all of them were gone so not wanting to spend 125 bucks I started looking at other fords and actually used one from a 2001 F-150. had to cut some hose down and add a piece between the vent line and the stock hose because it was bigger than that on the F-150 but all in all i managed to get it fixed for less than 10 bucks. And the filler neck looked to be almost brand new :)
