2003 Mountaineer rear hatch

So I've been having some issues with my 03 Mountaineer and maybe someone will be able to help me . I have noticed that my rear hatch has a crack in the top portion ( common from what I've seen ) . But what I have noticed recently and have attempted to repair is the rear hatch doesn't seem to seal all the way, when i open up just the top portion and go to close it it sticks out about half an inch but it's locking . I've attempted to tighten up the hinges but that didn't fix it . Rather then bring it into a shop I'm hoping someone will help me here .

It always looks slightly open. I've checked mine a few times in passing. Just the crappy design.
