Hello everyone,

This is my 1st post so I apologize for any errors I might make. I had my 2003 Explorer towed to a local mechanic shop after my son said he heard a "ticking" sound. I assumed it was lifters but the mechanic said after his inspection that it was the rear timing chain and it would be approximately $2300 to fix it or I could replace the engine for around $2000, I said let's go with the new engine as the original one had almost 180,000 miles on it. Now he says he can't find a "decent" engine for less than $1500 and it will be over $2800 with labor.

I feel like I'm being overcharged here based on what others have posted here. I'm in the Orlando area and would really appreciate some advice here.

Thanks,

New Engine

Thanks for the reply ncranchero! My old mechanic (about 75 miles away) said he could put an used engine in with labor for around $1700, so even with towing I still come out way ahead.
