2004 Ford Explorer XLT
I recently bought a 2004 Ford Explorer 4X4 with the 4.0 SOHC. I recently removed the engine to replace the timing chains and cassettes (the balance shaft tensioner and left cassette were toast) and just got it all back in. Unfortunately, now the engine will not turn over at all. It was running before I pulled the engine just the rattling from the chains. I have the -------- on the odometer when I turn the key to run. So far I have checked the wiring to the starter and checked all the fuses and relays dealing with the starter and the PCM. Any ideas or maybe something that I may have overlooked when I put it all back together? I'm pissed I spent all the time removing the engine, changing the chains, and reinstalling and now this. Could it be an issue with the PCM or power to the PCM? Does this year Explorer have the PATS? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated, I searched the forums but couldn't find too much.

Yes on PATS, but it should still crank. I believe PATs disables the fuel pump.....could be wrong.

Does it do anything when the key is turned?

It does nothing when the key turns on. The lights on the dash come on and the odometer goes --------. Engine doesn't turn over and I don't her the fuel pump going or anything.

There's a power issue then (not to be captain obvious.)

Need to check all connections that were disconnected. PCM wise.

That's my guess.

@Number4
FYI, (and anyone else), in 2004, the PATS system disables the ability to crank. Inserting a non-recognized key allows all the usual dinging and bonging noises, while the PATS light blinks at high rate. The engine will neither crank, nor are injectors enabled. imp
