Hello! I am hoping others have encountered what we are going through now with our 2004 Explorer (Eddie Bauer Edition)
Our ABS light was on & 4x4 was flashing & we were hearing a bit of grinding noise , sounded like warn breaks, so we checked the bearings to see if they may be on their way out. . Before changing the Bearing the lights would go on and off, and all of the different sounds would only happen with the lights off… After the replacement All of the lights went off & has remained off for 6 days however other things started happening… a louder grinding noise, and a clunking/banging noise that can be felt almost in the center of the SUV with some jerking (as if a gear is stuck or something) when accelerating. This clunking and jerking stops over 60KPH.
We know our Rear Diff will need to be replaced as it is leaking, it has made some light humming noises but nothing like what we are hearing now. If I was to try to explain how it sounds I would have to say metal on metal, but only at a high spot of something. We made an appointment for this Friday to replace the Rear Diff but now I am not convinced this is our sole problem as yesterday we took the truck for a longer ride then we have all week (due to the noises we wanted to stay close to home). The ABS light came back on, and the 4x4 started flashing again… ALL of the noises then completely stopped for the remaining ride home (20 mins)!!! We took it for a good 45 minute drive, including speeds higher than 60km p/h. The following day we started it up, the ABS light was on.. the second I put it into drive it went out and all the sounds came back.. I don’t want to drop 1000$ into this for a Rear Diff if this is not what our problem currently is, I would much rather fix this issue first, then replace the Diff after.
We have Googled everything and seeing things like Wheel Baring, Wheel Speed Sensor, Transfer case etc… But I am hoping someone here has experienced the same thing as they seem to all have the same kind of issues.
I briefly spoke to our old mechanic who thought it was weird that the noises stop when the lights go off, and not the other way around... -.-
Thank you in advance!!!
