2002 Explorer 4.6
I posted this in the “Tow Rig” section too, but think it might get more attention here.

I currently own a 2002 xlt 4.6 with the tow package.

I occasionally tow 5000 lbs, and the explorer does it well.

I just looked at buying a 2005 Limited 4.6 that appeared to have the tow package (2in receiver with 7 pin harness). But this truck had 3.55 gears. My 02 has 3.73.

I thought all tow package 3rd gens had 3.73? How different will the 3.55’s be than the 3.73’s I’m used too?

Thank you in advance,
Greg

It is my understanding that the 3.73 gears were used in 4.0L Explorers and 3.55 gears in 4.6L ones but this might be only for the 4th gen vehicles from 2006-2010. IMO, you won't see a big difference between these two ratios on roads that are not extremely steep. Both should handle the 5k lbs. you need it to pull.

I just wanted to update this thread.

I found out that my 05 v8 with the 3.55s did not come with the tow package. Previous owner had a factory 2in receiver and 7pin connector swapped over.

All 02-05 explorers v6 or v8 would have 3.73 gears with a factory optioned tow package.

It will be a while before I tow my trailer, but when I do I’ll update here to let you guys know if the lower gears had any significant difference.
