2005 explorer xlt 4.0 flex fuel

hi my name is brion , I am having a problem with my explorer was out of town and on the way back it started to sputter and misfire then cleared up as we drove the closer I go to home the worse it got to the point it had no power to pull any hills we limped it home 5 miles per hour we hear a popping sound on drivers side sounds like exhaust leaking under intake any help will be greatly appreciated I replaced the fuel filter, but no better
