2006 Explorer Limited V8
Hello All! New to the forum!

I'd like to get a performance exhaust system for my Limited V8. I've spent a good bit of time looking around the web and can't quite find what I'm looking for. I'd like a kit that is a true dual exhaust, if necessary, I'm even considering some long tube headers to make the job reality....if they're needed. I want an exhaust that will come straight out the back, no side exits. I'd also like some noise, but not so loud it's annoying on the highway.

Please give me some suggestions! THANKS!

Welcome to the forum!

I have not been able to find a true dual system either. I have also taken it to a couple of custom shops here, and all have said that there is just not enough room to do it. I think that's because of the gas tank and independent rear suspension taking up a lot of space.

I also want a straight back exit, the side exit looks wrong to me.

Dang, that sucks! My next step was to check for a place to do custom work. Perhaps I can get a 4" and then split it near the rear. I really, really want dual tips coming out the back. I can't stand those side exits!

Have you heard of anyone installing the SVT 4.6L intake on an Explorer? My grand plan was an intake swap, high flow air filter system, headers and dual exhaust.....and likely a performance chip tuned to make all this run well. I suspect the stock system will be very confused with these mods. LOL

Hey man, I want to do the same thing ,and there is no kit. custom bending and removing the spare tire from under the vehicle permanently is our only bet. My buddy has a bad ass pipe bender and I just got the 2 1/2" pipe a few weeks ago. I'm going to eliminate from the Y section back. where I cut out the Y is where the two pipes will start they will run together down the drivers side and then pair off just after the rear axle. there is a very tight spot coming past the rear axle that I'm a little concerned about, the two pipes may rub each other or rub the sides of the tunnel they will be routed through (at the rear axle). there are no headers at all that I can find, not even any shorty's.. also I am going to try and hollow out the two cats up at the motor. I did find a 4th gen X on youtube with duel ex. but it was only from the rear axle back, it gives ya a idea what duel looks like on the 4th gen X. I'll put up some pics when I get done with it. now I just need some energy.LOL

MY HERO!

What are you going to due about the spare situation? Can you fit a compact some how?

I'm ready to toss in my chips at this point. :(

Spare tire issue- I have measured and calculated several options with different size tires, and even with a 15" rim, and a 50 series tire("e.g" 225/50/15 ) there would only be 5-6" between the tire and the cross-member. Personally I feel that is to close to the tire, and unless you felt comfortable wrapping that section of pipe with some good heat shield tape then the only other option I have come up with is to us a Run Flat Tire and leave the spare at home. also if you have rear A/C then you should use heat shield tape on the A/C lines where the right side pipe is going to cross under them.

How about some pictures? :D

I have a 2007 Merc Mountaineer and I went to an exhaust shop and had them install Flowmaster exhaust with Stainless steel pipes and they custom mandrel bended the pipes. It cost me under $300 bucks and I didnt have to remove my spare underneath my truck because of the way they bent the pipe to give me dual exhaust tips. But I have yet to see a complete catback kit that you can get!

Just a few pictures for you guys to see! In the second pic you can still see the spare!

VERY NICE! :D

Do you have any shots of the exhaust? I'd like to see exactly what they did.

Thanks

Remember when you are running a dual exhaust you need to decrease the diameter of the tubing out the muffler not increase it. Look around I am pretty sure that I have seen dual kits from flowmaster, magnaflow, gibson, or cherrybomb for the 4.6.

BadThad ~ Unfortunately my truck is in the shop right now due to an idiot rearending me. When I get it back I will lift the rear end up and take a few pics. But basically its the standard y pipe from the exhaust manifolds into one Flowmaster. The Flowmaster is a single inlet and dual outlet muffler. From there both pipes go over the left rear axle just like the stock single pipe does. The left pipe follows the same routing that the stock pipe did and the right pipe goes in behind the spare and out the rear on the right side. I periodically check on the spare and there is nothing wrong with it. No banging or knocking or anything. Well now I do since dumbass rearended me but after I get it back it shouldnt be an issue.

Gotta love how close and distracted a good portion of the drivers are in Phoenix. Almost as good as the intoxicated idiot in a F150 that totaled one of my vehicles that was parked in a parking lot.

Sorry to hear about your truck....that just sucks.

I just had a drunk t-bone my Moutaineer while it was sitting in my driveway!

Wrong driveway I guess :D Sorry to hear that, at least no one was in the vehicle when it happened. I just don't understand why people cannot just call a cab when they know they have had too much to drink!

Wow, that sucks for both of you guys! It never ceases to amaze me how many bad drivers/disgraceful people there are out there. Glad both of you are alright, though!
