2001 Explorer Sport
Hey All! I'm new to the forum and was wondering if anyone knows much about the 2010 Explorer XLT Sport (4-door)? I have to get rid of my 2001 Explorer Sport (2-door) by September. I like the looks of the new Sport package but it only comes in AWD. I am used to 4x4 and don't know if the AWD's are as good in the snow. I wouldn't normally be concerned but we got 25+ inches of snow this year in one storm. The tires are also P255 50R20's so I'm guessing I'll lose some ground as they aren't too luggy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I have an 08 Limited AWD with the 20" wheels. The AWD is basically the control trac 4x4 system (4x4 auto setting) in the other explorers. there is no 4hi or 4 low in the AWD system, but as far as performing in the snow you'll be fine. I was very pleased with it's performance.

I was leary as well but i have no complaints, and it's not like i am taking mine off-roading where i'd need the 4low.

AWD does excellent in the snow. The tires may be your only downfall. You could always find a stock set of 16s/17s for winter use, and mount some snow tires on them. The Sports are nice. You hardly ever see them around here. I actually have never seen one on the road -- just the lot.

The next genration (2011) of the Explorer looks like it becomes more of a crossover (Grocery-getter) vehicle. unibody and turbo v4 or v6... yuck... I would definitely go with 2010 or older for any towing capability.

I have a '08 AWD LTD with the same 20s. Don't know how they work in snow as I use Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow tires on 18" Mustang rims for the winter. The AWD system is decent, but old tech.

Thank you all so much for the input! We're going to test drive a few this weekend and then decide if we want to order a Sport.
