Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at picking up a 2013 Explorer Limited 4WD that has about 45,000 miles on it, and I guess I would just like a little more affirmation that I'm buying a dependable vehicle for my family. Is there anything that I should be aware of with this specific vehicle?

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at picking up a 2013 Explorer Limited 4WD that has about 45,000 miles on it, and I guess I would just like a little more affirmation that I'm buying a dependable vehicle for my family. Is there anything that I should be aware of with this specific vehicle?

Do some research. Overall the car is good, but there are a couple of items you need to look out for before purchasing

1) check the hood thoroughly on the lip edge and under the weather stripping. Any dots or bubbling paint is corrosion and the hood will have to be replaced. (read this thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/hood-paint-bubble-issue-only.326943/) I would be shocked if the car did not have corrosion on the hood (negotiate it - probably about a $1,400 to $1,600 repair with new hood)
2) Given that the car is AWD have the car hoisted and throughly inspect the PTU for any leaks. This is a common problem with the car and the seal just needs to be replaced (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/ptu-problems.379087/)
3) Check the car to make sure it doesn't have the exhaust leak problem (here is a article on it right now: https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ooh-that-smell-nhtsa-investigates-ford-explorer-exhaust-leaks/). To check, hammer the car with the heat or ac on in both the front and back. You should get a rotten egg smell if there is a problem. Also check the repair history for anything related to the rear hatch or exhaust as that is a tell tale sign that the prior owner had the problem and the dealer tried to fix it.

Other than the big ones above the car is generally very reliable with a couple of small fit and finish problems.
