I recently noticed a new engine noise that is most noticeable at idle and lower speeds; however, I'm sure it continues at higher speeds as well because the intensity of the noise grows with increased throttle while parked or in neutral and (most noticeably) in reverse. Truthfully, the noise is actually at its loudest and becomes more of a harsh rattle sound when I reverse the vehicle up my driveway and have to give the throttle a good press to make it over the exaggerated lip on the end of my driveway.
Previous work completed on the vehicle within the last 6-16 months (oldest to most recent):
I replaced the serpentine belt and alternator-attached tensioner within the last 35k miles.
The intake manifold was replaced about 18k miles ago because my little one knocked it off the garage desk (and cracked it of course) when I was replacing the spark plugs and throttle body.
Roughly 12k miles ago, the front and rear suspension was replaced (including the lower control arms and all sway bar links), as well as nearly all of steering linkage. The brake rotors and pads were replaced at the same time.
I'd like to think it's not the belt or a pulley gone bad in 35k miles. Though it's pretty much the only thing I haven't replaced, I'm also hoping it's not a CV axle simply because I would have replaced them when I had everything off during the suspension overhaul.
Any thoughts or suggestions on how to best diagnose the exact cause of the noise is greatly appreciated!
